By default the Wan interface is typically going to have certain protective measures in place to restrict traffic from entering your network. While the LAN side allows connection to WAN. As an example here is an excerpt from pfSense install document.

Is it possible to port mirror using as a source, a LAG, consisting of 4 ports (2 in each member of a stacked set of PowerConnect 6248s). Everytime I try adding the source, using GUI, I get an error: Error! Failed to Set 'Type' with 'Tx and Rx' error occured FILTER_MISSING

Default, apparently 5 min, is too short for me. I have tried several CLI commands I found online but apparently not the right one. This in particular seems like it should work but I get an unrecognized command response. console(config)# ip http timeout-policy 1200

I thought (and still think) that the the main problem for me was the switch, it caused me a lot of other problems when I tried to put it back in production so i'm quite positive it is a faulty hardware.

Unfortunately the switch is only able to mirror individual ports as source ports. You can confirm this by testing setting up a mirror session where the source port is not part of a LAG.

Here is the command for HTTP. Console (config)# ip http exec-timeout 3 30 You can use the following for console, telnet, and SSH. Console(config)# line console Console(config-line)# exec-timeout 20 The CLI guide has further info on these commands and the different values that can be assigned. Page

Thanks again, Daniel. I'm familiar with how such a device would work and the principles of it, just wasn't sure if its operation would work consistently with both legs in the same VLAN. Let me run this scenario by you to see if return routing would work properly.

Forum Post: RE: Routing outside the 6248
It is not uncommon, and in several instances common practice, to dedicate subnets for connections from switch to router/firewall. Changing the setup to the one you described, would not change the outcome. The switch does not have the ability to NAT.

The Telnet part did not work, either with a time or with 0. The command is accepted OK but the timeout still happens. I can live without thist but if you have a suggestion, thanks in advance.

Glad to hear the http command worked. Have you tried making the Telnet change in the GUI? Perhaps it will accept the change using that method. System > Management Security > Line Passwords. There is a screen shot on page 192 : http://dell.to/1WDIGjA

I looked at that screen before. I see password aging but not session timeout. Am I missing something?

That firmware is a couple revisions out, but I do not see anything in the release notes that would indicate the newer firmware would resolve these messages. http://dell.to/28iw5Gi What device connects to port 46? That device could be sending PDUs for features the 7048 does not support.

However that Exec-timeout command should satisfy the requirements you are looking for. "The exec-timeout Line Configuration mode command sets the interval that the system waits until user input is detected."

The following KB article demonstrates this process on the PowerConnect switches. httpdell.to/1RX3MS4 While on the Force 10 switch the commands will be different, the overall concept is the same. ip directed-broadcast Page 463 httpdell.to/1UeRohP Keep us posted.

Ok I think I go itt. My mistake was misinterpreting your instructions. I thought "line console" took care of telnet also. I see now that I need to use "line telnet" separately. Knowing about "show line" helped me understand. Thanks again.

Each network can be different from one another, based on hardware availability and business needs/requirements. The diagrams in the picture all propose different setups using a different amount of hardware. The solution on the left will provide better redundancy than the other two.
